Jan 17, 2017

Back in December we accidently happened upon this animal park.  (It's on Hwy 150 E, in Mooresville, NC, and called Lazy 5 Ranch, for you locals).  You drive through the grounds at about 2 miles per hour and can feed the animals, but you must remain in your car.

Now it is very very frustrating to try to get good close up, focused, pics of animals.  So here we were with our cameras and just itching to get some good pics for once.  Of course, when asked if we wanted to purchase a bucket of their food for $3 bucks, I looked at Carl and said, "Well, ya, we want to be sure they come close enough for pics". (Oh how naive).

As you can see from the first picture, we not only did not have to coax them to come, they practically held us up like old-time highway men...

This steer and his two buffalo henchmen kept us held up until various other steer, ostriches, etc. could stick their heads in the car to get at the food in the white bucket.

I've got a dozen of these eyeball shots, not to mention all the bull spit on the steering wheel.

These birds were tall enough to see down into the car to the white food bucket between Carl's feet.  This one was not pleased that I rolled the window up so he couldn't try to reach over me.

Of course, once they realized you were out of food, they turned and walked away.  I have a ton of these butt shots.
But then, I perfected my timing, and was getting used to their ways, and got to where I could steer the car, get my camera out from between my legs and up, the window rolled down, and get off a shot or two, before being accosted or slobbered on or pecked at.

With Carl's looooong lens (completely unecessary) he only was able to get a few good shots, but they were great.  The ostrich that is the first entry in this blog, was his, as well as some really nice ones of the zebras at sunset.

Next time we will take the truck, Carl's sets up in the bed, with both cameras (for long shots and closeups), and I'll have the bucket of food to temp them away from Carl in the back.  I get the feeling I'm still going to come out of this covered in buffalo boogers!!

Need I say, we had a ball.
